Memphis, Tennessee (AFP) Memphis, the US capital of the third largest city in the United States, is still recovering from the devastating floods which swept through the city in late August, but some locals are looking ahead to the main event of the Memphis Music Festival: the Main Event.
Memphis was the epicentre of the flooding, with residents living on high ground flooding into homes and businesses.
A day later, the flooding subsided and residents are now hoping to reclaim the city and return to normal.
In an attempt to restore normalcy, a new festival called The Main Event is taking place in Memphis.
Its name, according to the organisers, is a reference to the iconic song “The Main Event” by the rock group Black Sabbath, which was released on August 25, 1967.
Its organizers said the main stage, the main building and the entire venue will be open for free to the public.
However, the event is being held under the radar, and is only taking place over the weekend, despite the fact that Memphis is in the middle of the most severe drought in the US history.
The drought, which has been plaguing the state for a decade, has left the water levels in the Gulf of Mexico at a record low.
In September, a US Senate subcommittee held an investigation into the conditions in Memphis, and said that while the state has improved, it still suffers from the drought.
The subcommittee said the drought has left Memphis with a drought index of 6.7 and is projected to continue to decline.
According to the US Army Corps of Engineers, the current drought in Memphis was the highest in the country in July of last year.
The report found that the state’s average rainfall over the past seven years was 2.4 inches (5cm) lower than the national average, with some parts of the state experiencing a record-breaking drought.
While the main venue will not be open to the general public, organizers have put up a website with a countdown to the event.
The countdown begins on Saturday, September 21, at 11:59pm local time, and will continue until September 30.
