We will have to wait until August to see the Games take place in Glasgow, and it is unlikely the UK will host the Games until 2020, with Rio de Janeiro due to host the Olympics in 2022.
But the Games are still in the planning stages, with talks expected to continue at the G20 in Russia later this month.
A key part of the talks, which have already seen a number of countries including Russia and Brazil, join in on the negotiations, is the issue of the Olympic Village.
The Games are expected to be held at a new venue in the Scottish city of Glasgow, with the city’s council having already confirmed plans to redevelop the old City of Glasgow Convention Centre.
The development of the city centre was set to begin in 2019, but was pushed back by the UK Government, with a delay to 2021.
While the council said the development would not start until 2021, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has said that it will “continue to monitor progress on this issue”, and that it is expected to make a decision by the end of the year.
However, the IOC also stressed that the city should “have a strong presence at the Games in 2021” to allow for the development of “more sports facilities and activities”.
“We hope to see a strong partnership between the UK and host nation hosting the Games, and a commitment to develop and enhance the city in the future.””
While there is no firm date for the Games to be played, there has been a suggestion the Games could be played at the former Royal Athletic Club on Glasgow’s Queen Street, which is due to be re-opened as the City of Culture in 2019.”

The former venue, which was demolished in 2012 and re-built in the years following, was intended to be a venue for Olympic and Paralympic events but the project was cancelled by the government when the city fell into recession.
However it is still in planning stages.
The Olympic Village, which would include accommodation for athletes and their families, was planned to be completed by 2021, but the construction has now been put on hold and the Games will be played there in 2021.
This week, a source at the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) said that discussions were ongoing on the possibility of hosting the Olympics at the IAAF World Athletics Championships in London in 2022, with discussions taking place on the date of the event.
However the IAF has yet to commit to any date for any of the events to be staged in the UK.
