— The United States is reporting the largest outbreak of the Zika outbreak in the Americas and its largest single death toll.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Friday that there were 3,664 confirmed cases of Zika in the U and Puerto Rico, with a total of 8,788 confirmed cases and 1,836 deaths.
Zika has killed more than 3,400 people in the United States and Puerto Rica.
It was reported Friday by the Centers for Diseases Control and Protection (CDC) that an additional 3,500 cases of the virus have been identified in Puerto Rico.
In Israel, the number of confirmed cases is now at 3,717, the Israeli Health Ministry reported Friday.
On Friday, Israeli authorities issued a decree declaring the Zika pandemic an emergency and ordering emergency closures of public transportation.
The decree also called for the evacuation of all residents and all government offices in Israel, including public health facilities.
Israel reported the first cases in the city of Haifa, and authorities there have said they expect more cases to be reported in the coming days.
There is no vaccine for Zika and health officials in Israel are still working to determine the best course of action.
At the end of April, Israel’s health minister said he was confident the virus could be contained in Israel.
Since then, the country has reported nearly 2,000 cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), most of them in the Jewish settlements of Kiryat Gat and Ramat Gan.
The disease is spread through contact with the virus and causes acute respiratory infections, including pneumonia, bronchitis and asthma.
According to the CDC, the latest cases are concentrated in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.
About 1,500 people have died in Israel from the virus, most of the fatalities being in the capital, Tel Aviv, which has seen the highest number of cases in recent months.
During Friday’s announcement, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel is working with the U of A to “make sure the virus does not spread here in the Middle East and elsewhere.”
In the United Kingdom, there have been 7,700 cases of measles in England and Wales, according to the Health Protection Agency.
More than 4,500 additional cases of MERS-CoV-2 have been reported in France, the health agency said Friday.
